{project impetus}

Black artists in the bay area are a finite resource that must be supported, uplifted, and offered space to communally rejuvenate to ensure that their culturally rich legacy carries on with vitality. Supporting the lineage and legacy of the Black Bay Area artist is to honor how integral we are to its infrastructure. Our black bodies highlight and reflect broader cultural values and traditions related to identity, community, and spirituality. Our black bodies are a sight for ancestral and cultural expression. Our identities and culture are dependent on the revival, embodiment, and archival of our resilience.

Building upon a successful performance format created in 2020, “from seed to bloom” is an extension of my interest as a choreographer to create opportunities for communal flourishment through collaboration. laura elaine ellis and Robert Moses will join me in choreographing and constructing, “from seed to bloom”, an evening length work set to propel me forward as an artist.

“from seed to bloom” is honored to take place at Zaccho Dance Theatre set in San Francisco’s historical African American Arts and Cultural District.

“from seed to bloom” has been enlivened by the efforts of laura elaine ellis, Robert Moses, and Johanna Haigood. These pivotal figures in the Bay Area have allowed for Black Artist’s voices and stories to be amplified thereby directly contributing to the vital lineage and legacy of Black Artist in the Bay Area.

The intimately designed performance invites you to witness how vital and integral the Black Artist is to every region we inhabit. The way we care, pass on, unearth, archive, and become is our culture in action.
